Scofflaw term is introduced.
January 31, 1924
(Jan.) The term is chosen from over 20,000 entries in a contest held in Boston to come up with the best new word to describe violators of the 18th Amendment. It is sponsored by banker Delcevare King King, vice president of the state chapter of the Anti-Saloon League, who wanted “a word which will stab awake the conscience of the drinker, and stab awake the public conscience to the fact that . . . such lawless drinking is . . . ‘a menace to the republic itself.'” “Scofflaw” was submitted by both Kate Butler of Dorchester and Henry Irving Dale of Andover, who split the $200 prize.
